A dream from the dissection room: an inspection of the heart, the head and the body — and an insurance policy that outlasts life.
In a dream I was in the dissection room
and let me tell you, you'd never guess
There I lay in that thin sleeping bag,
relaxed and seemingly perfectly fine.
Then the doctor stepped up to me with his opener
to rummage around inside and work out
hmmm… … …
why the early expiry date.
He was just starting on the chest depilation
and I watch my own mouth say to him:
Doctor, what is it about me that interests you so?
Kindly keep that scalpel outside my personal space,
and he says he has to examine the heart, etiquette or not
ahaaa
my heart is God-fearing and beautiful,
like Juliet on her balcony,
a kitten, a sunset
under a full moon
yeaaah
The doctor laughs,
however serious the subject may be,
and says,
a hardened heart can happen to anyone.
Even to the devout, to these ones or those over there.
The technical name of the disease is pharisee.
and I go hey ho, hey ho, don't you pull my leg (lisping)
that disease was wiped out a thousand years ago.
and he goes — noooo
it's a common wound from zeal, sometimes inflamed.
Some are seriously ill and nasty with it,
love is right there in their job description,
but off the clock they don't work,
you can take a break from love at other times too.
You'll spot it when you tickle a man with an opinion
and he doesn't laugh,
he knows exactly how the Lord God is meant to work
and why everything happens.
He argues with a stick,
everything good has already happened, it's in the past,
anything new is a spark for a fight,
righteous anger is a duty.
Try also whether compassion still smells good to him,
the old kind, unwashed, or the kind that festers,
whether he ever gets his hands dirty helping,
or just drops a coin in the box and struts about it
I give my heart a massage straight away,
I beat my chest as a precaution,
had I known about it sooner,
I'd have my heart serviced more often,
I'd like it beautiful,
like Juliet on her balcony,
a kitten, a moonset
at full moon
In a dream I was in the dissection room
and let me tell you, you'd never guess
The doctor with the opener gets curious,
let's at least examine the head, he says,
says sometimes he can't find a thought even in a crowd.
I stuck my tongue out at him,
don't go looking for a thought in my head,
I've got it on the tip of my tongue, just fish it out with tweezers.
The doctor agrees with a smile, so go ahead and talk.
(ahem ahem)
A head with no thoughts, run purely on feeling,
you'll spot it when the air from its ears shimmers with helium,
it's a bit dented from flying back and forth,
people wag it around like a tail.
The head flits from lady to lady, he loves her, he says,
from job to job, it doesn't suit him, he says.
It builds a life nice and solid on the foam of feelings,
with chewing gum for mortar and walls made of mistakes.
In self-defence I add,
my head, you see, isn't dented,
my voice doesn't change with helium.
There's as much going on in my head as in a play,
with Romeo on the balcony,
on a midsummer night
at noon under a full moon
I was once in the dissection room
and let me tell you, you'd never guess
I try to talk the doctor out of cutting for nothing,
tell him I'm healthy inside and in a good mood, right 🙂
No bodybuilder, look at these arms, these legs,
but the muscles of the will never stopped working.
Now and then I kick my body up the backside
so it doesn't go weak and start walking backwards.
The body remembers how to breathe, blink, ride a bike,
how to kneel, how to lift its feet so it doesn't trip,
it has a better memory than my head does, sir,
even if getting up at the first alarm usually fails.
Why the expiry date?
Maybe the Lord God simply took me to himself,
nobody cut Enoch open either.
Not that I have anything to do with perfection,
I'm hanging on an insurance policy that outlasts life,
covered by the grace of Christ.
Thanks to it, dig around wherever you like,
my soul is clean,
like the sun at midday,
Juliet on her balcony,
a kitten, a sunset
under a full moon
Crrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
What a stupid dream…
